We delivered a session on 5th Jan for 200+ students of PVPSIT-CSE Department on exploring open source, collaboration, and code contribution – not through heavy theory ๐, but by working together the way open communities actually do.
We began with a simple exercise: students took a role play of developers and came together around a real problem, discussed ideas , gathered requirements, and planned a solution as a group.
For many, this was their first experience of true collaboration – listening, disagreeing, refining, and ideating something collectively.
From there, we got our hands dirty.
Students installed #Linux tools๐งlike hashtag#GitBash, tried basic commands & pushing into the repository, created pull requests to a collaborative repo understood how #Git Tool & Platforms like GitHub, GitLab fits into everyday development – not as a complex tool, but as a shared language for teamwork.
We also spoke about journeys beyond college – how programs like Google Summer of Code and Outreachy help developers learn in the open, contribute to real projects, and grow as part of global communities.
The focus stayed on learning, push, Fork & pull requests.
We closed the session by sharing what SwechaAP stands for – building open, inclusive tech learning spaces and invited students to volunteer, contribute and learn together with the community.
What stayed with us was the curiosity in the room from the feedbacks is
Not just โHow do I get selected?โ
But โHow do I start?โ
Thatโs where open source begins.
Special Thanks to Dr. Sai Kiran Pasupuleti, Professor at PVPSIT-CSE Department for supporting and coordinating to make it as planned.
