About

What is Swecha

Swecha Organization or Swecha Andhra Pradesh is a community of Free software enthusiasts, IT Professionals, freelancers, students, academicians advocating Free and Open Source to build “Technology for Society” and to liberate knowledge for the commons and working towards bridging the digital divide.

We are a Not-For-Profit organization working in Andhra Pradesh since 2013, registered as Society in 2018 with 12A and 80G.

Our Philosophy

Science and tools of science should be liberated be made available for the benefit of common people in society, of which more than 90% are economically downtrodden and socially/Economically marginalised. This is the foundation for the inception of Swecha. Our vision is to take this philosophy to the ground level, and make it a practised tool in every underprivileged community.

Science is a by-product of curiosity and a systematic investigation. More than anything, science is a basic community activity: which is paying attention to evidence, using logic, rendering explicit assumptions, and testing hypotheses in a formal reproducible way. This science has been abused and exploited.

Exploitation has reached its peak, as in, essentially, only few control and benefit from the advancement of science and technology in various fields. Due to its control over authorities and systems, most of the research in various universities, the direction of the R&D spaces, the intent of the policies, and the labor of billions of people are largely designed/ controlled to accumulate wealth for a handful of people.

This leads to inequality in society, poverty, and adversity for oppressed people.
Swecha’s mission is to change that and make a solid foundation for Equality in Society, Prosperity for People, and create a Progressive world.

Our Vision

“A social movement that compromises diverse communities, which cultivates commons culture in various spaces such as philosophy, science, technology, policies, and administration, for creating a better society and uplifting marginalised sections.”

What do we do?

  • We strive to bridge the digital divide.
  • We ideate, develop and take equitable solutions to common people using Free and Open Source Software.
  • We implement and use advanced tools and technology to solve social issues.
  • Enable people and communities to understand the politics underlying tech policies and help them develop alternative policies that uplift the commons.
  • Cultivate the philosophy of commons in different communities, such as college students, school students, and employees.
  • Nurture Hacktivists and hacktivism.

Why we do “what do we do”?

We do it because we care for our society. We believe in equal opportunities for everyone in the world. We are clear that it is possible only by changing the flaws in the existing system. Throughout the history of human evolution, people are made to believe that the system in place is the best and must not be changed. Ironically it has constantly been changing and will continue to change. Our goal is to be a catalyst for a positive change.

We, the volunteers of Swecha, don’t do things to feel satisfied. We do it to bring change. We should choose our individual activities so that they contribute to the larger change we aim to bring about. The above point is the key validation to introspect our activities. If we can not connect our activities to the change we want to bring, there is no point doing them.

If we cannot connect our small, individual activities to the larger change that we aim for, then there is no point in doing that. And this validation is a key for the introspection of our organisation.

  • Our fundamental activity is to identify and uncover the hidden problems rooted in systems and question them.
  • Our mission is to create alternate models and structures for existing systems and
    strengthen them.
  • Our primary tool in this journey is to create communities that take our mission
    forward.
